How Bad Is Blasphemy?

Imagine a worker in a company who may do a good job but often speaks badly about the owner and the CEO. After he keeps doing it for a while, the big boss calls this man into his office one day.
The man goes up, not knowing what will happen to him. He doesn’t even know why he is called. Will he get a promotion or something else? Will it be good or bad?
When he arrives, the boss offers him to take a seat. After a few questions and answers, he tells the worker that he wants to hear the worker’s opinion on a delicate matter. Then he turns on a screen and plays all the evil talks the man said about the company and its leaders. The picture is sharp, and the sound is crisp.
How utterly humiliating! What can the man say to that? He cannot doubt that the best thing that can happen to him is that he is fired from the company immediately and there will be no more measures taken against him. He may mumble something about leaving the company and asking for forgiveness and that he is ashamed and terribly sorry.

Of course, this rarely happens in the corporate world. (Not the criticism of the bosses, but their recording.) But something similar will happen to everybody.
When we end our earthly careers, we will all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. He will show us the life we lived on earth. Nothing will remain hidden. Every secret will come to light, and the Judge will be just.
Under the Mosaic Law, blasphemy was punished by death. In the New Testament, Jesus said, “Every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment” (Matthew 12:36).

What shall we do then? Let’s ask God to forgive us for every idle word and not remember them. (Hebrews 10:17) Let’s strive for pure lips and a righteous tongue so that our speaking glorifies God. Let us be holy in our words so that the name of our Lord would be hallowed through us.

“For by your words you shall be justified, and by your words you shall be condemned” (Matthew 12:37).
